The International Recognition Award Eligibility Criteria
The International Recognition Award seeks to honour international writers who, in the view of the board of The Irish Book Awards, have contributed substantially to the health and wealth of the Irish book-trade. Suitable candidates should tick the following boxes:
- Author should have a major international reputation but must not be Irish
- Author should have a special connection to the Irish trade with a proven sales record
- Author should be popular, amiable, accessible and likely to accept the award
- Author should represent a real publicity windfall for the awards
The Bob Hughes Lifetime Achievement Award
Since 2007, The Board of the Bord Gáis Energy Irish Book Awards have conferred their Lifetime Achievement Award on a succession of Irish Literary Greats:
2014 Paul Durcan
2013 John Banville
2012 Jennifer Johnston
2011 Seamus Heaney
2010 Maeve Binchy
2009 Edna O’Brien
2008 William Trevor
2007 John McGahern
Future awards will go to worthy successors who are venerated for a “lifetime” of distinguished work over long careers. Booksellers, like readers and critics, have favourite writers. Any book sold keeps Yeats’s “greasy till” chiming but there are certain writers whose work booksellers actively enjoy recommending and selling to their customers. It is those good friends of the book trade that our Lifetime Achievement Award is designed to honour.
